Shoulder dystocia can lead to injury to both the infant and mother. Shoulder dystocia can cause damage to the baby's brachial plexus nerves. Brachial plexus injury (sometimes call Erb's palsy) is caused from damage to the nerves running through the spinal cord to the arms. Other injuries to the baby can include fractured clavicles, fractured humeri, contusions and lacerations, and birth asphyxia. Birth injury to the baby can be compounded by the use of forceps or a vacuum delivery. Injuries to the mother include excessive loss of blood and vaginal tearing.
- Premature Rupture of Membrane (PROM): Premature rupture of membrane can be threatening to the mother and child. Typically, labor occurs within a week of the membrane being ruptured, which can pose a serious risk if it occurs long before a baby is due. Another major risk of PROM is the development of chorioamnionitis (an infection of the placental tissues), which can harm the mother and child.
