Wake County Statistics
In 2020, Wake County saw a decrease in automobile collisions from the previous year. 2019 had 39,151 collisions and only 28,607 in 2020. The crash rate in Wake County was the lowest since 2011.
Out of those 28,607 collisions, there were 10,015 injuries. In 2019 there were a total of 13,312 injuries from the 39,151 collisions.
However, fatalities reported from automobile collisions in Wake County were up from 2019. The NCDOT reported 87 fatalities in 2020, compared to 76 in 2019. Wake County safety statistics show the overall fatality rate was 0.84, which is the highest rate since 2010.
Why The Higher Fatality Rate?
There are a number of reasons for the spike in fatal crashes from 2019 to 2020. Impaired driving, speeding and distracted driving are the three main reasons behind the rise in the fatality rate in Wake County.
In North Carolina, one-third of the crashes in 2020 involved victims who were not wearing a seatbelt. Speeding caused roughly 25%. Alcohol was a common theme in many Wake County safety incidents involving fatal collisions as well.
