Common Causes of Spinal Cord Injury

Any serious or high-impact injury accident can result in a neck or back injury, causing damage to your spinal cord.

The following list is some of the more common accidents which result in paralysis or spinal cord injury:

A spinal cord injury (SCI) can impact your ability to feel or your ability to move all or parts of your body. Depending on which part of the spinal cord is damaged, you can experience different losses of function or feeling. For example, if the area of the spinal cord around your neck is damaged, you may suffer from paralyses, such as paraplegia or quadriplegia.

Paraplegia

When the mid- to low-back area of the spinal cord is damaged, the resulting injury could lead to paralysis of the legs, or paraplegia. Most paraplegics will still have full function of their arms and torso, but they will require a wheelchair to get around.

Quadriplegia

When the spinal cord is damaged in your upper back or neck area, the resulting injury could lead to paralysis of your legs, as well as of the upper extremities, such as arms, hands, and fingers. In extreme cases, the ability to move your neck or head may be impaired as well.

It is also important to note that a broken back or broken neck is not necessary to have damage to your spinal cord; likewise, a broken back or broken neck may not necessarily result in a spinal cord injury.

Damage to the spinal cord may involve:

  • Bruising to the spinal cord
  • Scar tissue on the spinal cord
  • Pinched vertebra(e)
  • Broken or fractured vertebra(e)
  • Burst fractures
  • Subluxation
