Dog attacks, or by any animal, is a frightening experience. At Charles G. Monnett III & Associates, we often hear of attacks by dangerous dogs — one that has killed or inflicted serious injury without provocation.
In today’s Charlotte Observer, two Rottweilers attacked and injured two children in Newton. The children, aged 6 and 10, were taken to hospitals with severe injuries, according to Newton police. They had been playing in the yard of the home of their mother’s boyfriend while their mother was at work.
Typical aggressive breeds like Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, and Pit Bulls are the usual suspects, but any dog can attack resulting in broken bones, disfiguring wounds, cosmetic surgery, loss of income or extended hospitalization.
Usually, the animal was either left unattended in an unfenced yard or escaped the fence that the property owner failed to maintain. The consequences of these attacks may leave a victim scarred emotionally and physically for life. It is against the law for an animal to roam free from its owner’s real property or to be left unattended without being securely enclosed or inside the owner’s home.
What You Can Do Now
If you have been the victim of a dog attack there are few things you can do on your own:
- Seek medical attention immediately
- Contact your local Animal Control Authority and report the incident
- Obtain the animal owner’s information, such as their name, address and phone number
- Write down the name and phone number of any person who may have seen the incident
- Take pictures of the wounds
- Take pictures of the scene of the attack
It is important that you report this incident to Animal Control to establish the animal's attack history. Without an official report, it is difficult to show whether the animal is a serial attacker, and it may hurt your chances of recovering any compensation for your injuries.
