Union County Sheriff Killed in Truck Wreck

Sergeant Jeffrey Greene was on his way to work yesterday when a tractor-trailer jack-knifed coming to a stop and tumbled onto Green’s patrol car. The truck driver, Eddie Weeks, faces misdemeanor death by vehicle charges according to NC State Troopers. Weeks has received 5 traffic citations in his 20-year career, with 3 previous crashes. State DOT officials called Weeks’ record “unfortunately, not uncommon.”

The crash occurred on westbound U.S. 74 at the Sutherland Avenue stoplight, near Carolinas Medical Center – Union. Greene’s patrol car was stopped in the left turn lane waiting to turn left onto Sutherland when his cruiser was crushed by Week’s tractor-trailer.

Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey said that  “Jeff was a fine officer and a fine person. Every day he had a smile on his face, and every day he was eager to come to work. He loved his job.”

Flags have been lowered to half-staff throughout Union County in tribute to Greene. Sheriff Bailey described the mood in his office as “very somber. We’re still processing our loss.”
