Retinopathy of Prematurity

Charlotte Retinopathy of Prematurity Attorney

In a premature birth, babies are susceptible to retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a disease that affects the eyes of a newborn, and can potentially lead to blindness or loss of vision.

What is Retinopathy of Prematurity--ROP?

When a baby is born prematurely, its retina is still growing. During this growth period, the blood vessels bringing blood to the retina can develop abnormally. This abnormality is known as retinopathy of prematurity or ROP. Retinopathy of prematurity can be identified through regular eye exams scheduled for prematurely born babies who fit the criteria for susceptibility of ROP.
