Avandia Diabetes Drug Claims

Our firm is accepting cases for persons with diabetes who have suffered a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular condition, such as congestive heart failure or sudden cardiac death, while taking the drug Avandia. Avandia has been prescribed to patients suffering from type 2 diabetes, sometimes called adult onset diabetes. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia is a member of a class of diabetes medication called thiazolidinediones.

Avandia History

Avandia was first approved and sold in the United States in 2000. It has since been prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes by help the body control blood sugar levels. The current Avandia label warns of increased risks of congestive heart failure and liver problems. The drug began to receive increased scrutiny following a May 2007, article in the New England Journal of Medicine linking Avandia to increased risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. Concerns about the drug’s safety came from cardiologists and other physicians, who questioned whether increased risk of cardiovascular events had been overlooked or ignored.

Earlier this year, most members of a federal medical advisory panel recommended that the U.S. Food and Drag Administration either withdraw Avandia or severely restrict sales.

On September 23, 2010, the FDA announced that it will significantly restrict the use of the diabetes drug Avandia (rosiglitazone) to patients with Type 2 diabetes who cannot control their diabetes on other medications; it halted an ongoing study by the drug’s maker, and called for further investigation into a previous study of Avandia. According to the FDA, the new restrictions are in response to data that suggest an elevated risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, in patients treated with Avandia. European regulators went a step farther and ordered the drug taken off the market because of the safety concerns.

Avandia Side Effects

Avandia, like other thiazolidinediones, can cause fluid retention which may lead to heart failure. Potential Avandia side effects can include:

  • - congestive heart failure or heart damage
  • - heart blockages or cardiovascular ischemia
  • - heart attack
  • - stroke
  • - sudden cardiac death
